Youth Waterfowl Day 2011 will start promptly at 9:00 am Saturday August 6th at the Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve. Last year over 80 participants showed up for a half day of touring five "hands on" waterfowl stations that included filed layout hunting simulated on grounds blinds, wooden shotguns, decoys and live action "flying birds", a pellet gun range, dog training and retrieving, a marsh ride and a duck calling demonstration. The activities are aimed at ages 10-15 years. Lunch and a free cap & T-shirt will be provided along with a great chance to win numerous door prizes.  Thanks to sponsors and special friend and associates like the Brown County Parks Department, the Brown County Conservation Alliance, DU, WI Waterfowl Association, and Gander Mountain – Green Bay, American Transmission Company, Fleet Farm and others this event is made possible. Hope to see you there!

Duck Rescue continues with a record setting 1,600 ducks. This program has received three awards and has been featured in the August 2010 issue of Field & Stream's "Hero's of Conservation. Additionally the program was recognized for outstanding volunteer service at the WPS Brown County Volunteer Awards this year. The Wisconsin Wildlife Federation presented Co-Leadsman Joe Loehlein and Tim Braunel with the Conservationist of the Year award at their awards banquet in Stevens Point.  Additionally Duck rescue was recognized locally by the Brown County Conservation Alliance with the Brown County Conservationists award and in 2011 received a "Special Recognition Award" by the WI DNR Bureau of Wildlife Management. The duck rescue team has honed their skills and reaches out with educational materials during rescues to families and neighbors who discovered the ducks in peril.   Additionally, the project was a feature story in "Wind beneath young wings" in the June 12, 2010 Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.  Visit www.duckrescue.com

Goose Roundup  2011 saw over 900 local Canada Geese "corralled up" and banded as part of a seven year long project in which the GBDHA has volunteered time, materials and manpower to assist regional WI DNR Wild Life Managers in making this banding effort, second to none,  a success.  This year, unclassified data was released at the Winter WI DNR Awards as to how the GBPDA refined the project skills. A few years ago, a local Wildlife Manager, trying to impress the group on the work and commitment involved explained it could be like trying to "round up squirrels". Revealed at the awards ceremony was the fact that the GBDHA members quietly practiced rounding up squirrels until they felt comfortable rounding up geese. Thanks for the inspiration, and we're not going to name that manager however, T.B, has been an important supporter since! The banding took place in Brown, Kewaunee and Door Counties. Watch for those bands this fall. If you should collect one, it is very important to the study to call it in. The data will be used to determine the harvest rate of local geese vs. migrants and has potential to influence the quota numbers for additional harvest. For band returns, just call 1-800-327-2263 and display it proudly on your call lanyard.

And Finally

East Shore of Green Bay Hunters take notice!!!  We have come a long way from the brink of having a state criminal law passed that could have reached out 100 yards into the public waters surrounding any dwelling and prohibited the exercise of navigational and hunting rights.  ALL THIS CALMOR WAS DUE TO A FEW DISREPECTFUL SO CALLED "HUNTERS" ALONG THE EAST SHORE.  After we testified in Madison against the bill, we meet up with the then opposite side and found them to share the same discontent over violators as we did.  Please read the 2010 Waterfowl Hunting Guide for Landowners and Hunters in the Lower Bay produced by Bruce Deadman of DU WI as a result of collaboration between the attorneys, law enforcement and DNR staff. It's the bible on lower bay hunting.   Study it well, if you're violating, there's a plan in place and you'll be caught.  And hunters, across the state, even though we have an open carry law change, think about using a gun sock or case to get pass the neighbors or property owners who aren't as familiar with weaponry as you and think you are hauling a cannon past their property.  Let's all help make the use of natural resources more pleasure full for all the users, do your part to be responsible and ethical. Carry your cell phone and Report violations to the DNR Hotline at 1-800-943-0003.
